Random Thoughts from the 4Penny VP of Development

Windows Server 2008 Startup folder

Recently I've been installing the BGINFO utility from sysinternals on all my servers and VMs, I have so many that sometimes I don't know where I am <smiles>

I'm fond of just dropping a shortcut into the 'startup' folder on the machine, but on Windows Server 2008 it's a pain to find, I have to spend 5 minutes searching for it, so...

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

That's where it it.

Thanks for this info! Was quite handy when I too, was trying to set up BGinfo.  PS. Why is a VP of Dev tasked with installing BGinfo anyhow? =)

Hillarious... I was doing the exact same thing with BGinfo.  Appreciate you taking the time to put this info up here.

You should use desktopinfo (www.freewarefiles.com/Desktop-Info_program_21513.html) its better than BGINFO as its realtime and you can also see it when using RDP.

try it out

You can also right-click on the startup folder from the start menu, and click 'Open All Users'.

Nice one, Steve: I had found the local one for each user (C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup) but not the global one.  Thanks for posting.

Incidentally, I was looking for it in conjunction with another highly useful sysinternals tool: Process Explorer.  I had put it in the global start-up folder originally (and then forgotten the location!) but found that I wanted to have a different refresh rate for my own personal use than the other users of the machine.  Proc Exp remembers your settings the next time it is run but only when being started from a local start-up folder, I found (which makes sense).
